Drug-free Baltic Sea

Old medications are often flushed down the drain. From there they move to wastewater treatment plants, which are not designed to treat medical waste. The medical waste ends up in the Baltic Sea and other water systems, where it gradually has an impact on living species.

What we did

Cocomms seized the challenge and gathered a group of parties interested and concerned about the situation. In our Baltic Sea free of medical waste campaign, singer Mira Luoti and actor Tommi Korpela showed consumers how to take their old and surplus medications to pharmacies instead of flushing them down the drain, and encouraged consumers to take action.

The campaign immediately started spreading in social media. The amount of pharmaceuticals returned to pharmacies also grew as a result of the campaign.
